An important part of a client's financial plan is having a sound Charitable Giving Strategy. More and more of my clients are using their wealth to make a positive impact in their communities and around the world. When discussing which charities to donate to, clients often want to know where their donations are going and how they are being used. At the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, impact is front of mind and the donations they receive do so much more than provide for research and cures.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is at the forefront of the fight to cure cancer. They are the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. Since 1949, they’ve invested nearly $1.3 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

They are the leading source of free education and financial support for blood cancer patients and families. They provide personalized, one-on-one support, including assistance with identifying and enrolling in a clinical trial. With their nationwide grassroots network of more than 50,000 active online volunteers, they drive policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers.

Recently, I had the esteemed pleasure to interview DeAnn Hazey, CFRE, the Executive Director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s South Florida Region, comprising 13 counties including Palm Beach/Treasure Coast, Broward/Miami-Dade and Puerto Rico.

Ms. Hazey has directed nonprofits and successfully executed fundraising campaigns for more than 27 years for organizations including 4KIDS of South Florida, Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, National Association of College Stores Foundation, The Cleveland Orchestra, TRW and the American Heart Association. She also managed her own fundraising consulting company, Innovative Resources, for nine years. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College Europe, is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), and a graduate of Leadership Broward Class XXXVII. Passionate about helping at-risk children and community impact projects, Ms. Hazey is a respite foster parent, Immediate Past President for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Broward/Fort Lauderdale Chapter and Community Projects Chair for Leadership Broward.

Today, Ms. Hazey is charged with ensuring the continued vitality, growth and success of the South Florida region by maximizing opportunities and securing sustainable support to increase community presence and access to free educational and financial resources for cancer patients, as well as life-changing therapies and research for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Listen in on a compelling 4-part interview series in which DeAnn Hazey shares the different ways LLS supports its patients and their families, its goals for 2021, and the many ways you can support their cause.
